If you were to rank the most important times to stay hydrated, while drinking alcohol would easily make it in to the top five. One of the most common ways to avoid a hangover is to drink plenty of water (a good rule is to alternate a glass of water with every alcoholic drink). As a second defense against dehydration, why not choose drinks that contain hydrating ingredients? I am sharing two of my favorite cocktails that contain hydrating produce: grapefruit and cucumbers.

Grapefruit Vodka Soda

Grapefruits contain 91 percent water and are packed with potassium, Vitamin C, choline and lycopene – a combination that can maintain cardiovascular health.

Ingredients:

Serves: 1
1.5 oz. Vodka
3 oz. fresh grapefruit juice (about ½ grapefruit)
6 oz. Grapefruit La Croix (club soda works as well)

Preparation:

Combine ingredients with ice cubes in a shaker glass. Shake well and strain liquid into a glass over ice.

Cucumber Jalapeno Margarita

Cucumbers contain 96 percent water and contain Vitamin K, Vitamin A, and pantothenic acid – also called B5.

Ingredients:

Serves: 1
1.5 oz. white tequila
.5 oz. triple sec
1 oz. lemon juice
.5 oz. fresh lime juice (about ½ lime)
3 slices cucumber
2-3 slices jalapeno (keep seeds for spicier drink)

Preparation:

Muddle cucumber and jalapeno slices with lime juice in a shaker glass. Add tequila, triple sec, lemon juice and ice. Shake thoroughly and strain over a glass with ice. Add additional cucumber and jalapeno slices for garnish.
